The challenge is that integration architecture is rarely revisited once it begins working.
In one environment we recently assessed, the ERP supported more than 40 separate integrations. Most were functioning, but very few had clear documentation explaining:
• where business logic was applied
• how failures would be detected
• who owned the integration long term
The system itself was stable, but the surrounding ecosystem had become difficult to manage.
Integration complexity is one of the most underestimated sources of ERP risk.
Not because integrations fail frequently — but because when they fail, the root cause can be extremely difficult to trace.
The most resilient environments treat integrations as part of the architecture, not just technical connections.
